Sometimes the hesitation before a big career move isn’t hesitation at all, it’s information.
When the same feeling means two very different things
I’ve been in those moments: the new role on the table, the opportunity to pitch a bold idea, or the chance to launch something of my own.
And that gut instinct kicks in.
A tightness in my chest. A thought that whispers: Am I ready for this?
It’s easy to label it as fear, fear of getting it wrong, fear of being seen, fear of falling short.
But sometimes, that same physical and emotional response is actually misalignment, a signal that, while the opportunity might look great on paper, it doesn’t fit with what matters most to me now.
How Susan Jeffers helped me see the difference
Years ago, I read Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers.
It completely reframed how I think about fear. Jeffers reminds us that fear is a natural part of growth, it’s often just the mind’s way of saying, “We’re heading somewhere new.”
That courage isn’t in waiting for the fear to disappear, it’s in taking the next step while it’s still there.
But the book also sparked another awareness for me: sometimes it’s not fear at all. Sometimes it’s a signal that, despite ticking all the “should” boxes, this choice doesn’t align with my values, energy, or current priorities. That’s not a growth edge, that’s a compass check.
Why the distinction matters
-
Fear says: “This is stretching me.” Lean in, and you grow.
-
Misalignment says: “This isn’t for me — at least, not now.” Press pause, and you protect what matters.
Confusing one for the other can send you in the wrong direction, either backing away from an opportunity you’re ready for, or pushing into something that’s quietly eroding your energy.

A quick self-check next time you feel “off” and this week's leadership reflection journal:
-
Name the feeling without judgment.
-
Ask: Is there excitement under the nerves, or only relief at the thought of walking away?
-
Notice if this feeling shows up when you’re growing… or when you’ve ignored your compass before.

Fear often invites you to step forward. Misalignment invites you to pause. Both are worth listening to.
And if you’ve never read Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, it’s a short, powerful read that’s worth having on your shelf, not just for career decisions, but for life.
